A project that had flown under the radar is now making waves as Universal and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions unleash an impressive trailer for the film “Monkey Man.”

Scheduled for an exclusive theatrical release on April 5, “Monkey Man” may not fall into the horror genre, but its intense action-thriller vibes are likely to captivate horror enthusiasts. Take a look at the compelling trailer above!

Originally slated for Netflix, the project took a different turn, with Peele’s enthusiasm for Dev Patel’s vision leading to a theatrical release from Universal.

The official press release provides a glimpse into the film’s premise: “Oscar® nominee Dev Patel (Lion, Slumdog Millionaire) makes an astonishing directorial debut with an action thriller centered around one man’s quest for vengeance against corrupt leaders who not only murdered his mother but also continue to exploit the poor and powerless systematically.

“Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, symbolizing strength and courage, ‘Monkey Man’ stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous individual scraping together a meager living in an underground fight club. Night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he endures brutal beatings from more popular fighters for cash.

“After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As childhood trauma resurfaces, his mysteriously scarred hands trigger an explosive campaign of retribution against the men who robbed him of everything.

“Packed with thrilling fight and chase sequences, ‘Monkey Man’ is directed by Dev Patel from his original story and screenplay, co-written with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). The film’s international cast includes Sharlto Copley (District 9), Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in Heaven), Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm), Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai), Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero), Adithi Kalkunte (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Aarya), and Makarand Deshpande (RRR).”

“Monkey Man” is produced by Dev Patel, Jomon Thomas (Hotel Mumbai, The Man Who Knew Infinity), Oscar® winner Jordan Peele (Nope, Get Out), Win Rosenfeld (Candyman, Hunters series), Ian Cooper (Nope, Us), Basil Iwanyk (John Wick franchise, Sicario films), Erica Lee (John Wick franchise, Silent Night), Christine Haebler (Shut In, Bones of Crows), and Anjay Nagpal (executive producer of Bombshell, Greyhound). Executive producers include Jonathan Fuhrman, Natalya Pavchinskya, Aaron L. Gilbert, Andria Spring, Alison-Jane Roney, and Steven Thibault.

Universal Pictures presents a Bron Studios production, a Thunder Road film, a Monkeypaw production, a Minor Realm/S’Ya Concept production, in association with WME Independent and Creative Wealth Media.
