Supermassive Games’ popular video game ‘Until Dawn‘ is being adapted into a horror film directed by David F. Sandberg (known for ‘Lights Out’, ‘Annabelle: Creation’, and ‘Shazam’). Sony’s Screen Gems has officially announced that the movie will hit theaters on April 25, 2025.

The cast includes Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Michael Cimino (“Never Have I Ever”), Ji-young Yoo (“Expats”), and Odessa A’zion (Hulu’s **Hellraiser**). Peter Stormare, who appeared in the video game, will reprise his role, joined by Maia Mitchell and Belmont Cameli.

The original draft was written by Blair Butler (The Invitation), while Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) contributed to the script. The film is described as “an R-rated love letter to the horror genre.”

‘Until Dawn’ follows eight teenagers who decide to spend a night at a cabin on the fictional Blackwood Mountain, exactly one year after two girls—twins of one of the group members—went missing. Soon after their arrival, the group is stalked by a psychopath, forcing them to survive until sunrise.

In the game, players switch between the eight characters, making critical decisions that significantly affect the storyline, resulting in countless different outcomes.

The film is being produced by Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions, with producers including Dauberman, Sandberg, Lotta Losten, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

The success of ‘Until Dawn’ inspired Supermassive Games to create ‘The Dark Pictures Anthology’, a series of horror video games featuring a similar interactive format. Supermassive is also behind the slasher video game ‘The Quarry’.
