‘The Exorcist: Believer’ Surpasses $100 Million in Global Box Office Earnings, Outpacing “Halloween Ends”
Over the past weekend, “The Exorcist: Believer,” directed by David Gordon Green and serving as a legacy sequel to the iconic horror franchise, achieved a significant milestone in the global box office. The film officially crossed the $100 million mark in worldwide earnings.
As of its 17th day in theaters, “The Exorcist: Believer” has amassed a total of $107.5 million in worldwide box office receipts, with $54.2 million of this total originating from the United States.
For reference, David Gordon Green’s previous project, “Halloween Ends,” which marked the conclusion of a trilogy of legacy sequels, wrapped up its global run last Halloween season with $104.3 million in earnings.
The reported production budget for “The Exorcist: Believer” hovered around $30 million, suggesting that the film is likely turning a profit at the box office. However, it’s essential to note that Universal acquired the rights to “The Exorcist” for a substantial $400 million, complicating the assessment of this movie’s success.
It’s evident that Universal and Blumhouse harbored hopes of “The Exorcist: Believer” emulating the tremendous success of “Halloween” in 2018, which concluded with an impressive $259.9 million in global earnings. This resounding achievement cemented the trilogy plans for the “Halloween” series. Still, the outlook for “The Exorcist” franchise doesn’t appear as promising.
Apart from the financial considerations, “The Exorcist: Believer” has commenced its planned trilogy with predominantly negative reviews, raising doubts about the longevity of this particular creative direction.
To date, two sequels to “The Exorcist: Believer” remain in the pipeline, although the return of David Gordon Green as the director is uncertain. “The Exorcist: Deceiver” has already been scheduled for release on April 18, 2025. It’s conceivable that these subsequent installments might opt for a direct-to-Peacock release, presenting a strategic approach for the trilogy’s future.
We’ll be keeping a close watch on developments in the future of “The Exorcist” franchise.
