‘The Exorcism’: Meta Horror Film Produced by Kevin Williamson Debuts Digitally Next Week
Russell Crowe, known for his role in “The Pope’s Exorcist,” takes the lead in a new meta possession horror film produced by Kevin Williamson, titled “The Exorcism,” set to debut digitally next week.
Vertical Entertainment will release “The Exorcism” on VOD starting July 9, 2024, with preorders available now on Apple TV. The film is directed by Joshua John Miller, acclaimed for his work on “The Final Girls” and known for acting in films like “Near Dark” and “And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird.”
Miller co-wrote the script with M.A. Fortin, both of whom have a personal connection to the horror genre, inspired by Miller’s father, Jason Miller, who starred in “The Exorcist.” Joshua Miller shared, “The origins of the film stem from my childhood spent watching my father…playing the doomed Father Karras.” He continues, “With ‘The Exorcism,’ we wanted to update the possession movie formula for a world where no one group owns goodness and decency over another.”
In “The Exorcism,” Crowe portrays Anthony Miller, a troubled actor whose life begins to unravel during the filming of a supernatural horror movie. His estranged daughter, played by Ryan Simpkins, questions whether his troubles are a result of past addictions or something more sinister.
The project was previously known as “The Georgetown Project,” and Miller reflects on the film’s genesis, saying, “The lore of any ‘cursed film’ has captivated me ever since.” The cast also includes Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, and David Hyde Pierce.
“The Exorcism” promises a fresh take on the possession genre, exploring themes of vulnerability and the darkness within.
