“The Devil’s Bath”: Shudder Picks Up Psychological Horror Film by the Creators of ‘The Lodge’
A new psychological horror film, “The Devil’s Bath,” is in the works from the creators of “The Lodge” and “Goodnight Mommy,” Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Variety has announced that horror streaming service Shudder has secured the rights to the film, just ahead of its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Expected to hit screens this summer, “The Devil’s Bath” unfolds in 1750 Austria, amidst villages surrounded by dense forests. The story revolves around a devoutly religious woman who, after marrying her beloved, finds herself increasingly burdened by the monotony of her daily life. As her existence becomes suffocatingly mundane, she descends into a dark spiral of despair and isolation, eventually contemplating a shocking act of violence as her only means of escape.
The cast includes Anja Plaschg, David Scheid, Maria Hofstätter, Camilla Schielin, and Lorenz Tröbinger.
Directors Franz and Fiala expressed their pride in finding a home for “The Devil’s Bath” at Shudder, emphasizing the film’s exploration of depression and its commitment to giving voice to marginalized women throughout history.
Shudder’s vice president of global acquisitions and co-productions, Emily Gotto, praised Franz and Fiala as an exceptional filmmaking duo, highlighting the chilling and impactful nature of “The Devil’s Bath.”
Produced by Heimatfilm Productions and Ulrich Seidl Productions in collaboration with Heimatfilm and Coop99 Filmproduktion, “The Devil’s Bath” is set to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival next week. As anticipation builds, we’ve been treated to a sneak peek with some first-look images from the upcoming horror flick.
