Nearly twenty-four months ago, Netflix secured the rights to the possession horror film “The Deliverance” from Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels, known for acclaimed works such as “Precious” and “The Butler.” The streaming giant reportedly invested a substantial $65 million in the project. Excitingly, Netflix’s recent “What’s Next” announcement has unveiled that this highly anticipated horror movie is set to make its debut in 2024.

Synopsis of “The Deliverance”: The narrative follows Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother, who relocates her mother and children to a new home. Strange occurrences unfold, leading child protective services to suspect Ebony of child abuse. However, as these incidents reveal themselves to be of a demonic nature, Ebony not only contends with the system for her children but also finds herself engaged in a spiritual battle against a demon, fighting for her faith, her life, and the souls of her children. The story is inspired by true events.

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

Andra Day takes on the role of Ebony, the central character who discovers that her family’s new home is haunted by a demonic presence.

Lee Daniels, the director, also co-wrote the script with David Coggeshall (“Orphan: First Kill”), Elijah Bynum, and Thomas Westfall. Daniels is also actively involved in producing the project under his Lee Daniels Entertainment banner, alongside Pam Williams. Additional producers include Tucker Tooley through Tooley Entertainment and Jackson Nguyen and Todd Crites via Turn Left Productions. Executive producers include Greg Renker, Hilary Shor, Gregoire Gensollen, and Jackie Shenoo.

Netflix acquired the rights to “The Deliverance” after a fierce bidding war involving major players such as MGM and Miramax. While a specific release date beyond 2024 is yet to be announced, the substantial investment and the anticipation surrounding the film suggest a significant rollout.
