The terror continues as Taissa Farmiga reprises her role as Sister Irene in ‘The Nun 2‘, and Entertainment Weekly has unveiled a first look image that hints at the horrors she will encounter when facing off against Valak, portrayed by Bonnie Aarons, once again.

In the image, we catch a glimpse of Sister Irene amidst a group of faceless nuns, setting the stage for the chilling atmosphere that awaits.

It has been two years since the last installment in ‘The Conjuring Universe,’ with ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ released in 2021. However, the wait is almost over as ‘The Nun 2,’ a sequel to the successful 2018 spinoff, is set to break the dry spell later this year. Despite mixed critical reception, Corin Hardy’s ‘The Nun’ proved to be a massive box office hit, amassing a staggering $365 million in ticket sales. Remarkably, it remains the highest-grossing film in the entire Conjuring Universe, surpassing even the two core ‘Conjuring’ movies helmed by James Wan.

Given the popularity of Valak, the demonic nun, it was inevitable that she would make a return in a sequel. ‘The Nun 2’ is scheduled for theatrical release on September 8, 2023, a full five years after Valak’s initial solo outing. This time, Michael Chaves, known for ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ and ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,’ takes the directorial reins.

As for the plot, here’s what we know so far:

“In 1956 France, a priest is murdered, and an evil force begins to spread. In the sequel to the global hit ‘The Nun,’ Sister Irene once again confronts the demonic presence of Valak – The Demon Nun.”

Chaves shared some insights with EW, stating, “Maurice made his way to France and he’s working at this boarding school as kind of a handyman. He has a friendship and flirtation with one of the teachers there, and you can see him starting to mature, so that’s where our characters start out. But we know from the first film that there’s something terrible inside of him, that Valak escaped within him, and events pull Irene back on this collision course with her old friend.”

Chaves also teased that his film will connect to the wider cinematic universe.

In addition to Farmiga and Aarons reprising their roles, ‘The Nun 2’ features a talented cast including Storm Reid (‘Euphoria’), Anna Popplewell (‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ franchise), and Katelyn Rose Downey (‘Clean Sweep’).
