Sony’s Release Schedule: ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Sequel, and ‘Venom 3’ Take Center Stage
Sony Pictures’ 2023 and 2024 Theatrical Slate Faces Significant Shakeup Amidst SAG-AFTRA and WGA Strike.
A recent report by Deadline reveals that Sony Pictures’ upcoming theatrical schedule for 2023 and 2024 has experienced a major shakeup due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike. Several highly anticipated films, including “Kraven the Hunter,” the “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” sequel, “Venom 3,” and “They Listen,” have been impacted by the strike.
The strike’s effect on guild actors’ ability to promote their films has led to delays in Sony’s release plans, with some dates subject to further changes.
Among the films facing delays is the R-rated “Kraven the Hunter,” featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson (known for “Avengers: Age of Ultron”). The official red band trailer recently debuted, providing a glimpse into Kraven’s origin story, complete with intense and bloody sequences. However, fans will have to wait longer, as Sony has pushed the release date from October 6, 2023, all the way to August 30, 2024, with a Labor Day weekend opening.
The untitled “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” sequel, initially slated for a holiday release on December 20, 2023, has been rescheduled for an Easter release on March 29, 2024. According to Deadline, the film has completed photography but requires additional work with actors for the finishing touches. This sequel has taken over the release date previously assigned to “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spiderverse.”
Not all scheduled shifts involve delays. Sony has scheduled “Venom 3” for July 12, 2024, contrary to previous expectations of an October 2024 release. Nevertheless, given the competition around this date, it remains uncertain if the date will hold.
The schedule shift has also affected the Blumhouse/Sony collaboration, “They Listen,” starring John Cho (“Searching”) and Katherine Waterston (“Alien: Covenant”). Initially pushed back by a full year, the horror film has now been temporarily removed from the schedule altogether, with no fixed release date. The plot details for “They Listen” remain under wraps, adding to the film’s mysterious allure.
As the AMPTP continues to resist cooperation and resume negotiations, it is likely that more release date shifts and delays will occur in the coming months. Fans and filmmakers alike will need to remain patient and adaptable as the strike’s impact unfolds.
