Samara Weaving and Jason Segel to Star as a Killer Couple in ‘The Trip’ Remake
In 2021, Tommy Wirkola (director of Violent Night and Dead Snow) unleashed a bloody, comedic thriller with The Trip. Now, according to Variety, a remake is in the works, featuring a star-studded cast. Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant, and Juliette Lewis are set to lead the new version of The Trip, with Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) directing.
The film follows a dysfunctional couple (Segel and Weaving) who retreat to a remote cabin under the guise of reconnecting, only for each to have plans to kill the other. But things take a violent turn when their murder plots are interrupted by a group of real killers, sending the story into chaotic mayhem.
Paul Guilfoyle (LA Confidential) and former UFC star Keith Jardine (Inherent Vice) also join the cast, likely playing the murderous outsiders who complicate the couple’s deadly plans.
The script is being adapted by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, with Taccone and Wirkola serving as executive producers, and Karen Gillan co-producing.
“I can’t wait to see Jorma bring his totally singular sensibility to the material,” Wirkola shared with Variety. “That, combined with this killer cast, makes me beyond excited that this film will truly stand out in the cinematic landscape.”
Taccone added, “I’m a huge fan of Tommy’s work, and I love the original film. I have a totally singular sensibility, and I can’t wait to see what I bring to the material.”
In his review of the original, Trace Thurman predicted that an English-language remake was inevitable, stating, “It wouldn’t be surprising if we get an English-language remake at some point in the near future, but until then, this version is readily available for your demented pleasure.”
Filming is currently underway in Finland, with more updates on The Trip remake expected in the coming months.
