Saffron Burrows, From ‘Deep Blue Sea,’ Makes a Horror Comeback in ‘The Morrigan,’ an Irish Supernatural Thriller
Late this year, the picturesque landscapes of Northern Ireland will provide the haunting backdrop for the filming of the upcoming horror film “The Morrigan,” as reported by Deadline. Leading the cast is Saffron Burrows, recognized for her role in “Deep Blue Sea.”
The premise of the film, as detailed by Deadline, revolves around a successful archaeologist who, despite her professional accomplishments, has been an absentee mother. Her journey takes her to Ireland, where she embarks on an excavation of a centuries-old tomb. However, within the confines of this ancient site lies a peril that has remained concealed from humanity for generations. When this malevolent force is unleashed, she finds herself locked in a harrowing battle to rescue her rebellious teenage daughter from the clutches of a vengeful Pagan War Goddess.
The formidable deity at the heart of this supernatural tale is none other than “The Morrigan.”
Joining Saffron Burrows in the cast are James Cosmo, known for his role in “Game Of Thrones,” and Toby Stephens from “Black Sails.” The film is both written and directed by Colum Eastwood, who previously worked on “Black Medicine.”
The worldwide sales for “The Morrigan” will be handled by AMP, with sales negotiations slated for this month in advance of the American Film Market (AFM). The project has secured a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement, signaling its commitment to industry standards.
James Norrie, representing AMP, expressed enthusiasm for the film, stating, “The Morrigan breathes new life into the demonic possession genre. With its rich pagan folklore, it manages to be a balls-to-the-wall horror and a brilliant female-centric genre movie showcasing just how far a mother will go to protect her child. We are thrilled to be aboard.”
As production commences in Northern Ireland, “The Morrigan” promises to be an intriguing addition to the world of supernatural thrillers, blending folklore and maternal determination in a spine-tingling narrative.
