Showtime’s upcoming prequel series to “Dexter,” initially named “Dexter: Origins,” has been rebranded as “Dexter: Original Sin,” as reported by Variety, which also announced Patrick Dempsey’s casting (known for “Thanksgiving”).

According to the website, Dempsey will portray Aaron Spencer, the Captain of Miami Metro Homicide, known for his longstanding relationship with Christian Slater’s character, Harry Morgan.

Joining Dempsey in the cast are Patrick Gibson (“Shadow and Bone”) and Molly Brown (“Senior Year”). Gibson will play the youthful version of Dexter Morgan, originally portrayed by Michael C. Hall. Additionally, the ensemble includes James Martinez as Angel Batista, Christina Milian as Maria LaGuerta, Alex Shimizu as Vince Masuka, and Reno Wilson as Bobby Watt.

Set in 1991 Miami, “Dexter: Original Sin” charts Dexter’s transformation from a student to a vigilante serial killer. Guided by his adoptive father, Harry (played by Slater), Dexter adopts a code to execute targets while evading law enforcement detection, all while embarking on a forensics internship at Miami Metro Police Department.

Clyde Phillips, the original showrunner of “Dexter,” will oversee this prequel series as well. The executive producers include Michael C. Hall, Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, Robert Lloyd Lewis, and Michael Lehmann.
