Hammer Films, a renowned name in the world of horror cinema, is back in the limelight with a fresh owner and a thrilling lineup of new movies. The first in this exciting resurgence is “Doctor Jekyll,” a project that has already generated buzz due to its casting of Eddie Izzard in the titular role.
Mark your calendars for the UK cinema release of “Doctor Jekyll” on October 27, as Hammer Films officially makes its return to the horror genre. To get a taste of what’s in store, the freshly relaunched Hammer has just unveiled the official trailer for the film, promising spine-tingling thrills and chills.
Director Joe Stephenson, in a recent interview with Fangoria, shed light on the film’s unique approach, stating, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. There seem to be some assumptions that because Nina is a trans character, we are somehow going to make it about gender. That is not the case; the themes of our film are true to the original work.”
Emmy winner Eddie Izzard takes center stage as Dr. Nina Jekyll in this exciting Hammer Studios/B Good Picture Company production, which offers a modern reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic novella, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.” Joining Izzard is Scott Chambers in a co-starring role, with Lindsay Duncan, Jonathan Hyde, and Simon Callow also gracing the cast.
Joe Stephenson, known for his work on acclaimed dramas like “Chicken” and the feature documentary “McKellen: Playing the Part,” directs the film. He played a pivotal role in developing the project alongside first-time writer Dan Kelly-Mulhern.
“Doctor Jekyll” follows the story of the reclusive Nina Jekyll, who forms an unlikely friendship with her newly hired assistant, Rob, portrayed by the rising star Scott Chambers. Together, they must join forces to prevent the destructive force of Hyde from wreaking havoc on Nina’s life.
Behind the scenes, Stephenson takes on the role of producer, supported by Guy de Beaujeu (“Journey’s End”) and Liam Coutts (“The Good Drug”). Christian Angermayer (“Army of Thieves,” “Filth”) serves as the Executive Producer, adding his expertise to the project.
Throughout cinematic history, numerous actors have taken on the iconic role of Jekyll/Hyde, including John Barrymore, Fredric March, Spencer Tracy, Jack Palance, and most recently, Russell Crowe. With Eddie Izzard at the helm, “Doctor Jekyll” promises to bring a fresh perspective to this timeless tale of duality and transformation.
As Hammer Films makes its triumphant return, horror enthusiasts can look forward to an exciting revival of this legendary studio’s signature chills and thrills. Don’t miss the resurrection of Hammer, starting with the eagerly awaited “Doctor Jekyll.”
