‘Nosferatu’ Receives “R” Rating for Bloody Violence and Graphic Nudity
Focus Features is set to ring in Christmas with a chilling new take on Nosferatu, directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse). This fresh adaptation of the horror classic has officially been rated “R” by the MPA for “bloody violent content, graphic nudity, and some sexual content.”
The film stars Bill Skarsgård as Nosferatu/Count Orlok and will hit theaters on December 25, 2024. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Lily-Rose Depp, all of whom bring their talents to this gothic horror tale.
Eggers’ Nosferatu tells the story of a young woman in 19th-century Germany who becomes the object of obsession for an ancient Transylvanian vampire. As Orlok stalks her, he brings untold terror with him. Eggers both directed and wrote the screenplay, producing alongside Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus, Jeff Robinov, and John Graham.
The original Nosferatu, directed by F.W. Murnau in 1922, is a silent classic that follows Count Orlok as he seeks to buy a house in Germany and becomes obsessed with the real estate agent’s wife. This unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula was almost lost forever due to legal battles but remains a landmark in horror history. Werner Herzog also famously directed a remake of the film in 1979.
Fans of Eggers’ atmospheric style can expect a visually striking and terrifying reimagining of this iconic vampire tale.
