MaXXXine: Pearl and X Sequel Takes on the Whodunit Slasher Genre
Production for “MaXXXine,” the sequel to director Ti West’s films “Pearl” and “X,” reportedly wrapped up in May. Around the same time, production company and distributor A24 released a first look image from the movie, featuring franchise star Mia Goth alongside singer Halsey. While details about the film’s release date remain scarce, Scream magazine has revealed that “MaXXXine” is described as a “whodunit slasher.”
This description differs somewhat from Mia Goth’s previous statement that the film is “a superhero movie.” Goth explained her perspective, stating that Maxine, the character she portrays, has evolved significantly and is now a survivor who fights for what she has and is determined not to back down. She described Maxine as a proactive, determined, and focused woman who goes after what she wants.
“MaXXXine” is both written and directed by Ti West and features Mia Goth reprising her role as Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress striving for stardom. The film follows Maxine’s journey as the sole survivor from “X,” as she continues her pursuit of fame and endeavors to make it as an actress in 1980s Los Angeles.
The cast of “MaXXXine” includes Mia Goth, Halsey, Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, and Giancarlo Esposito. Esposito plays an agent for adult film and Z-list movie actors, while Debicki portrays a film director, Monaghan and Cannavale play LAPD detectives, and Bacon takes on the role of a private detective.
“MaXXXine” is produced by A24, Ti West, Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss, with Mia Goth serving as an executive producer. Ti West has described the film as focusing more on the industry itself and the VHS boom, along with dealing with the dangerous world of underground filmmaking.
Fans of “X” and “Pearl” can look forward to catching up with Maxine in this intriguing new installment of the trilogy. West has expressed that “MaXXXine” has the best script among the three films.
