NEON has confirmed plans for a sequel to the horror hit “It Follows,” titled “They Follow,” with David Robert Mitchell returning as writer and director.

Maika Monroe, reprising her role as Jay Height from the original film, discussed the sequel in a recent interview with Collider, teasing significant developments. In the first installment, Jay encounters a supernatural entity relentlessly pursuing her after a sexual encounter. Now, in “They Follow,” the threat intensifies, spreading beyond Jay to become omnipresent.

“David is brilliant,” Monroe praises. “He revolutionized the genre with ‘It Follows,’ and he wouldn’t embark on a sequel unless he could surpass it. When I first heard about a sequel, I wondered where we could possibly go next. But after reading the script, I was blown away. It’s exceptional.”

Reflecting on her character’s evolution, Monroe hints at unexpected developments: “Where Jay finds herself now is intriguing and unexpected. The sequel takes everything to the next level—bigger, darker, and more intense. Reading the script was mind-blowing.”

Expressing her enthusiasm for the role, Monroe adds, “I’m thrilled beyond words. It’s been a while since a project excited me this much. There’s so much depth to explore, and I anticipate it’ll be incredibly challenging and rewarding. Working with David again, I can’t wait.”

“They Follow” promises to push the boundaries of horror storytelling, building on the foundation laid by its predecessor. More details on the film are anticipated as production progresses. Meanwhile, catch Monroe alongside Nicolas Cage in NEON’s “Longlegs,” hitting theaters on July 12th, offering another dose of unsettling cinematic thrills.
