M. Night Shyamalan Secures SAG Interim Agreement for Enigmatic Project

Earlier this year, acclaimed director M. Night Shyamalan embarked on the production of “Trap,” a psychological thriller intriguingly “set at a concert,” slated for release by Warner Bros. The production must have gone exceptionally well because there’s more exciting news on the Shyamalan front: Hollywood North Buzz has reported that another enigmatic Shyamalan project, “Good Grades,” has secured a SAG-AFTRA Interim agreement. This agreement will enable filming to commence even amidst the ongoing SAG strike. Waste no time, as “Good Grades” is set to kick off filming in Mississauga, Ontario, starting next month.

But what is “Good Grades” all about? Well, the truth is, we’re left in the dark.

While we eagerly await more information about Shyamalan’s latest project, an interview he conducted with NME has surfaced, offering a glimpse into his creative process. Shyamalan shared, “I have a new idea that I’ve started writing. It’s out in 2024, and it’s very, very exciting. It’s a thriller. It’s very unusual and very new compared to what I’ve been trying to do [recently], but I’m feeling very excited about the story, so much so that I can’t wait to tell it to you guys. I love that feeling, that electricity of ‘wow, I can’t wait for you to see it.’ I will say this, the angle into the story is why it’s so exciting. The story might be something that you’ve seen before, but the angle is very, very unique—the point of view.”

The intriguing part is, we don’t know if Shyamalan was referring to “Trap” or “Good Grades” in his interview.

It’s somewhat surprising to witness Shyamalan gearing up for “Good Grades” so swiftly after filming “Trap.” Nevertheless, he did mention in an interview with Collider that he already had a clear plan for his next three films, with “Trap” being the first in the lineup. He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I have three movie ideas. I even have the structure of all three to some extent. And so it’s a very weird and interesting situation I’m feeling. I wish I could tell them faster. I wish I could get there faster, but there is no shortcut. I have to spend the six to nine months to write it. I have to storyboard for three months, and then we have pre-production, and then shooting it, and edit for as long as I can get every single second.” When questioned about whether it might take six years to release all three movies, he expressed his hopes of moving even faster than that. The back-to-back filming of “Trap” and “Good Grades” indicates his commitment to bringing these films to audiences as swiftly as possible.

In an interesting twist, Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana, also managed to secure a SAG Interim deal for her feature directorial debut, the gothic fairy tale “The Watchers,” set up at Warner Bros. with a theatrical release date of June 7, 2024.
