Jessica Chastain to Star in Rob Savage’s New Horror Film ‘Incidents Around the House’

Described by author Grady Hendrix as “the monster that lives inside your closet,” Josh Malerman’s eerie novel Incidents Around the House is officially getting the big-screen treatment—and it’s shaping up to be something truly chilling.

According to Deadline, director Rob Savage (Host, Dashcam) is helming the adaptation for Universal Pictures, with horror heavyweight James Wan producing through his company Atomic Monster. Jessica Chastain (IT: Chapter Two) is set to lead the cast, bringing serious genre cred to the project.

The screenplay is being written by Nathan Elston (Succession), and the film is a joint production between Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, two studios well-known for delivering some of horror’s biggest hits.

Malerman’s novel, published by Del Rey in summer 2023, has been praised as a haunting and original take on domestic terror. Here’s the official synopsis:

Eight-year-old Bela lives in a world made up of her small but close-knit family—Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But lurking in the shadows is Other Mommy, a sinister presence who asks Bela the same chilling question each day: “Can I go inside your heart?”

As bizarre and terrifying events escalate throughout the house, it becomes clear that Other Mommy is no longer content with asking. She’s growing more powerful, more aggressive—and Bela begins to realize that if she doesn’t say yes, her entire family could suffer the consequences.

As cracks begin to show in her parents’ marriage, the safety Bela has always known begins to fall apart. And all the while, Other Mommy waits for an answer.

With Rob Savage’s knack for intimate, nerve-shredding horror and a powerhouse cast led by Chastain, Incidents Around the House could be one of the most unsettling horror adaptations in years.

Stay tuned—this one’s creeping closer.
