‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel Officially Begins Production
Production on Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is officially underway, as announced this morning via the film’s official social media channels. The highly anticipated slasher film is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025.
While plot details remain under wraps, the original film followed four friends who, after a tragic accident, are reunited when a hook-wielding killer begins stalking them in their small seaside town.
Freddie Prinze Jr. is confirmed to return to his role from the original film. In a playful Instagram post, his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, teased a potential Scooby-Doo reunion by sharing a behind-the-scenes photo from the set. However, don’t expect her to reprise her role as Helen Shivers, as she clarified, “I am dead,” when asked if she’d return for the new film. But in the world of horror, death is never truly permanent, and there could still be a way for Gellar to contribute to the sequel.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is also in talks to return, joining a growing cast that includes Billy Campbell, Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Haur-King, Lola Tung, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nichols, and Gabbriette.
Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), the sequel is based on an original screenplay draft by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.). The first film, released in 1997, was directed by Jim Gillespie and written by Kevin Williamson (Scream), based on Lois Duncan’s novel. The film led to two sequels in 1998 and 2006, with Hewitt and Prinze Jr. returning only for the first sequel. A direct-to-video third installment, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, introduced a new cast and is considered a standalone entry. The franchise was also revived briefly with an Amazon television series.
With production now underway, more details about the sequel will likely surface in the coming months.
