Almost a year has elapsed since the exciting news broke that Elizabeth Hurley, renowned for her role in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery,” had inked a deal to star in “Piper,” a chilling horror film helmed by director Anthony Waller. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has officially confirmed that the movie is all set for its grand unveiling at FrightFest this coming Sunday, August 27th. As a tantalizing precursor to this premiere, the eagerly awaited Piper trailer has made its debut online, and you can catch a glimpse of the suspense in the embedded video above.
Taking a trip down memory lane, director Waller first made a significant mark on the film scene back in 1995 with the gripping thriller “Mute Witness.” However, he quickly dampened the goodwill garnered by that movie with the underwhelming “An American Werewolf in Paris.” Waller did go on to create a couple of films subsequent to the Paris episode, including the 2000 Bill Pullman-starrer “The Guilty” and the 2009 sci-fi horror flick “9 Miles Down.” Fans and critics alike are hopeful that “Piper” will propel Waller back into the limelight with its potential to leave a lasting impression.
Crafted by Waller from a story conceived by Duncan Kennedy, this supernatural thriller thrusts Elizabeth Hurley into the sinister clutches of “an evil, child-stealing folklore legend.” It offers a contemporary and darker spin on the age-old tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, wherein a vengeful and restless spirit seeks out individuals who have evaded justice for their crimes and exacts retribution by abducting their offspring. The film’s synopsis teases the tale of Liz (portrayed by Hurley), an émigré who relocates with her daughter Amy to a picturesque German town. However, Liz’s concealed dark secret from her past endangers Amy’s life, placing her squarely in the sights of the malevolent Piper. The only ray of hope for Amy’s salvation appears in the form of Luca, a young and enigmatic street magician. Can he rescue her from the clutches of the relentless Piper?
Joining Elizabeth Hurley in the cast are Mia Jenkins (“Hanna”), Jack Stewart (“Float”), Ryan Webber (“The Funhouse Massacre”), Robert Daws (“The Man Who Fell to Earth”), Ieva Aleksandrova-Eklone (“Out”), Arben Bajraktaraj (“Taken”), Alma Rix (“Dumar”), Gundars Abolins (“What Silent Gerda Knows”), Jurijs Djakonovs (“Crime Solving for Beginners”), Elizabete Liepa (“Christmas in the Jungle”), alongside newcomers Evija Koltone and Dominik Gabriel Roseti. Anthony Waller, the director himself, also makes an appearance in the film.
“Piper” has already secured distribution in the UK under the banner of 101 Films; however, an official release date is yet to be disclosed.
