Eli Roth is Ready to Serve Seconds with “Thanksgiving 2”
Despite all the bad news, we got about franchise slashers lately, there is finally some good news — depending on how you look at it — to come out of Hollywood today. Eli Roth says he will return to the director’s chair to direct Thanksgiving 2.
The sequel is scheduled to have a holiday 2025 release date according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The original was a sleeper hit this past month, grossing about $30 million globally, doubling its production budget. That’s no turkey.
“John Carver will kill again! @thanksgivingmovie sequel is a GO!!!” said Roth in a social media announcement. “Thank you to everyone who supported ORIGINAL HORROR in theaters!!! Go see it now on the big screen while it’s in cinemas. The sequel is set for release in 2025! Taking a year to get the script right, working on it starting today!”
Thanksgiving is an homage to slashers of sorts. It took the best parts of that genre and incorporated them into its storyline. One of the main accolades is the intro wherein a Black Friday sale at a big box retailer turns deadly, prompting the vengeance of a vigilante killer who wants to make a meal of those responsible for the tragedy.
Destined to be a seasonal favorite, this is Roth’s most acclaimed movie he’s directed to date. Of course with these types of films, there can’t be just two, so we will have to see whether or not Roth makes this a real slasher franchise homage and gives us a third film.
