David F. Sandberg Helming Film Adaptation of Video Game ‘Until Dawn’
Celebrating its upcoming 10th anniversary, Supermassive’s popular video game “Until Dawn” is set to make its mark on the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Renowned director David F. Sandberg, known for his work on “Lights Out,” “Annabelle Creation,” and the two “Shazam” movies, will take the helm of the Until Dawn movie.
Blair Butler, credited for Sony’s “The Invitation,” penned the initial screenplay, while Gary Dauberman, known for his work on “IT” and “Salem’s Lot,” is now actively involved in refining the script.
The Hollywood Reporter provides a sneak peek into the film’s premise, describing it as an R-rated homage to the horror genre with a focus on an ensemble cast. While the specific details remain shrouded in mystery, Screen Gems is gearing up for a thrilling cinematic experience.
“Until Dawn” revolves around eight teenagers who embark on a night’s vacation in a cabin on the fictional Blackwood Mountain, a year after the mysterious disappearance of two girls, the twin sisters of one group member. Their peaceful retreat takes a sinister turn as they come under attack from a psychopath, forcing them to navigate the perilous night until sunrise.
In the interactive game, players alternate between the eight characters, making crucial decisions that significantly impact the storyline, leading to a multitude of possible scenarios.
The Until Dawn movie is a collaborative effort between Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions, with producers including Dauberman, Sandberg, Lotta Losten, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions.
The success of “Until Dawn” inspired Supermassive Games to create “The Dark Pictures Anthology,” a series of horror video games that share a similar interactive approach. Additionally, Supermassive is credited for the slasher video game “The Quarry.”
