‘Cuckoo’: Hunter Schafer Unveils Outlandish New Plot Details for Upcoming Horror Film
The anticipation for the upcoming horror film “Cuckoo,” directed by Tilman Singer and distributed by NEON, has been shrouded in mystery, with only tantalizing hints about its storyline. However, a recent interview with star Hunter Schafer has shed some light on the film’s intriguing plot, and it sounds utterly wild.
Scheduled for release in theaters on May 3, 2024, “Cuckoo” follows the story of 17-year-old Gretchen, who reluctantly moves to a resort in the German Alps to live with her father and his new family. Upon arrival, they encounter Mr. König, her father’s boss, who takes a peculiar interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister, Alma. As strange occurrences unfold, Gretchen discovers unsettling secrets that involve her own family.
Joining Schafer in the cast are Dan Stevens, Jessica Henwick, Marton Csókás, Greta Fernández, and Jan Bluthardt.
Spoiler alert: Schafer teased the film’s bizarre antagonist, a bird-like monster with a chilling scream that aims to impregnate women with its offspring, drawing inspiration from the behavior of cuckoo birds, which lay their eggs in the nests of other species.
Despite the monstrous elements, “Cuckoo” is expected to delve into psychological horror, exploring themes of isolation and disorientation. Schafer explained, “It came down to identifying a feeling of being sort of alone and a bit lost and disoriented by your surroundings…that sort of elevates all of these really terrifying conspiracies that are happening around her.”
“Cuckoo” premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and is set to make its international debut at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas, next month.
