Blumhouse Considers ‘Friday the 13th’ a Dream Project
The long-standing dispute over the ownership of the Friday the 13th franchise has been a significant chapter in horror movie history. While the dust has settled somewhat in recent years, it appears that another studio is eager to dive into the fray. Blumhouse, known for producing the new Halloween trilogy and the upcoming The Exorcist sequel Believer, has expressed keen interest in making Friday the 13th the centerpiece of their next major project.
Ryan Turek, a producer at Blumhouse, spoke with Inverse, affirming that Friday the 13th is firmly on the studio’s radar. He and Jason Blum share a common desire to take on the iconic franchise. Turek stated, “Jason [Blum] and I are definitely in agreement that Friday the 13th is the thing we would love to get our hands on. I really want to go back to the basics. You don’t need too many ingredients for a Friday the 13th film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Voorhees in a mask.” Jason Blum had previously expressed his interest in obtaining the rights to Friday the 13th.
In terms of Blumhouse’s enthusiasm for potentially reviving the Friday the 13th franchise, Turek added, “Listen, I’ve gone on the record saying Halloween is the ultimate slasher film for me. That’s my favorite slasher film of all time. But Friday the 13th as a franchise is one that I just bow down to. I just love everything about it. And if we were able to live in both worlds, like we do with Halloween, then to be able to live at Crystal Lake for a while would be so incredible.”
Since the ill-received 2009 reboot, there has been no new Friday the 13th movie. While a Friday the 13th TV series (not to be confused with the previous one) is in the works, featuring original final girl Adrienne King in a recurring role, it seems like a logical move for Blumhouse to take on the franchise. After all, before it veered off course, David Gordon Green’s Halloween films appeared to be promising continuations of the original stories and characters. Furthermore, the license for Gun Media’s Friday the 13th video game is set to expire this year, leaving fans eagerly awaiting new adventures with Jason Voorhees.
What are your thoughts? Would Blumhouse be a good fit to tackle Friday the 13th?
