Blair Witch Co-Creator Eduardo Sánchez Talks Unrealized Prequels, But Confirms No New Projects

Eduardo Sánchez, co-creator of the 1999 horror film “The Blair Witch Project,” has revealed that there are currently no new projects in the works at Lionsgate. Sánchez also talked about the unmade Blair Witch prequels that he and co-director Daniel Myrick had in mind.

“This power has no morals, you can’t reason with it,” Sánchez said of the Blair Witch. “It’s just this thing where sometimes it helps people leave the woods and there’s always a reason, sometimes it kills people, sometimes it takes them over, sometimes it disembowels them, sometimes it kills kids. It’s just this thing that creates turmoil and likes to mess with things.”

Sánchez said that he and Myrick wrote a prequel to “The Blair Witch Project” over 10 years ago, but Lionsgate didn’t want to make it because it was too expensive. The script, which was set in the 1800s, would have explored the origins of the Blair Witch and the Native American mythology surrounding her.

Sánchez also said that he and Myrick would have liked to make a movie about Elly Kedward, the woman who is said to have been the inspiration for the Blair Witch. Kedward was a real person who was accused of witchcraft in the 1800s and was banished from her town.

While there are no new Blair Witch projects in the works at Lionsgate, Sánchez said that he is still hopeful that one day he and Myrick will get to make their Elly Kedward movie.

“I think there’s still a lot of potential in the Blair Witch mythology,” Sánchez said. “I think there are a lot of stories that can be told.”
