“Beetlejuice 2” Wraps Production
Beetlejuice 2, the long-anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice, has officially completed filming, as announced by Burton on Instagram. The sequel, directed by Burton and written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, is based on a story by Seth Grahame-Smith. The cast includes original stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, along with new additions Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, and Justin Theroux.
The film’s production faced delays due to industry-wide strikes. Initially scheduled to begin in mid-2022, filming was postponed to May 2023, taking place in London and around Princess Helena College in Preston, Hertfordshire, England. Key exterior scenes were also shot in East Corinth, Vermont, the location of the original movie’s outdoor scenes. However, the production was temporarily halted in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, with only a day and a half of filming left to complete.
Burton expressed his gratitude for the progress made despite these challenges, noting that the film was “99 percent done”. The filming finally resumed on November 16, 2023, in Melrose, Massachusetts, and wrapped up the following day. “On this last one, Beetlejuice 2, I enjoyed it,” the director also said, highlighting the rarity of genuinely enjoying work on a major Hollywood blockbuster.. “I tried to strip everything and go back to the basics of working with good people and actors and puppets. It was kind of like going back to why I liked making movies.”
Reflecting on the experience, Burton remarked on the joy of returning to the basics of filmmaking, emphasizing working with talented actors and practical effects. Michael Keaton echoed this sentiment, highlighting the fun and creativity involved in working with practical effects, akin to the approach of the original film.
Beetlejuice 2 is scheduled for theatrical release on September 6, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures
