Abigail Schaaff’s Film ‘The Monster of Many Noses’ Marries Fantasy with Local Legends
Abigail Schaaff, a filmmaker based in Barcelona, is taking the reins of the upcoming film titled “The Monster of Many Noses,” and Variety is offering an exclusive first glimpse into this intriguing genre-defying project.
Filmax has officially joined forces with the production, marking a significant development in the project’s journey. According to Variety’s recent report, this film is set to seamlessly blend the realms of the fantasy genre and local legends, addressing important societal themes in the process.
Set against the backdrop of 1968 in a small mountain village, “The Monster of Many Noses” (“L’home dels lassos”) delves deep into the tapestry of Spanish history. It connects the turbulent 1960s to the traumatic 1930s, the decade of Spain’s Civil War, whose harrowing atrocities were shrouded in silence during the transition to democracy in 1970s Spain.
The story follows three children who embark on a daring quest to evade the ominous Man of Many Noses, a formidable figure deeply ingrained in Catalan folklore. This sinister character is known for hunting down children who have spun too many lies on the final day of the year. But the children are not the only ones gripped by fear; the film also explores how lies from the past can have a haunting presence.
The film features Pablo Derqui (known for “Burning Body”) and Ivan Benet (renowned for “Riot Police”) in prominent roles. The screenplay, a critical element of the narrative, has been skillfully penned by Eric Moral and Jorge Velasco.
Ivan Díaz of Filmax expressed enthusiasm for the project, describing it as a “strong, beautiful film.” He noted that the film follows a proven formula of taking a deeply rooted legend from Catalan folklore and transforming it into a genre story with universal appeal, drawing from a broader audience. The film promises to be a captivating exploration of history, myth, and the human condition.
