’28 Years Later’ Sequel Welcomes Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson to Cast
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, the dynamic duo behind the cult classic horror film “28 Days Later” from 2002, are teaming up once again for the highly anticipated sequel, “28 Years Later.” According to THR, the sequel has secured an impressive cast including Jodie Comer (“Alone in the Dark,” “Killing Eve”), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kraven the Hunter”), and Ralph Fiennes (“The Menu”).
Garland is set to pen the script for “28 Years Later,” while Boyle will take the directorial reins. Additionally, Garland is planning to write at least one more sequel to expand the franchise, with director Nia DaCosta currently in talks to helm the second installment.
As of now, plot details remain under wraps, leaving fans speculating about the roles that Comer, Taylor-Johnson, and Fiennes will inhabit.
The original film, “28 Days Later,” received a sequel in 2007 titled “28 Weeks Later,” which was executive produced by Boyle and Garland but directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Now, Boyle and Garland aim to kickstart a new trilogy with “28 Years Later,” with Garland penning all three entries and Boyle taking the director’s chair for the first installment.
Boyle and Garland will also serve as producers alongside original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, former head of Fox Searchlight Pictures, the studio division that originally supported the British-made movies and their sequels.
The plot of the original film followed Cillian Murphy’s character, who awakens from a coma to discover England in ruins after a virus outbreak turns its victims into bloodthirsty killers. Murphy’s character navigates this dystopian landscape, encountering survivors portrayed by Naomie Harris and Christopher Eccleston’s maniacal army major.
While Murphy is set to executive produce, his appearance in the film remains uncertain for now.
Discussions surrounding a third installment in the franchise, initially titled “28 Months Later,” have circulated for several years. However, it seems that “28 Years Later” is finally gaining momentum in 2024, fueled by this recent casting announcement. Stay tuned for further updates as the project develops!
