Filming has officially wrapped on Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, the highly anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, which aims to kick off a new trilogy. Ralph Fiennes recently revealed to IndieWire that the first two films in this series have already been completed.

Fiennes shared intriguing plot details about 28 Years Later, which had been kept under wraps. He explained, “Britain is now 28 years into a devastating plague that has turned people into violent, rabid creatures, leaving only a few uninfected communities. The story follows a young boy searching for a doctor to save his dying mother, leading her through the stunning landscapes of northern England. However, lurking in the forests and hills are the infected. Ultimately, he discovers a doctor who initially seems peculiar but turns out to be a force for good.”

That doctor, as you might have guessed, is portrayed by Ralph Fiennes himself.

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are reuniting for this 28 Years Later trilogy, with Garland penning the script and Boyle returning as director for at least the first installment.

28 Years Later is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025, courtesy of Sony.

The cast includes Jack O’Connell (Amy Winehouse: Back To Black), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Erin Kellyman (The Green Knight), and Ralph Fiennes (The Menu). Cillian Murphy is executive producing and is reportedly returning to reprise his role.

Nia DaCosta (Candyman*, The Marvels) will take the helm for the second film in the trilogy.

The original 28 Days Later*, released in 2002, starred Cillian Murphy, was written by Alex Garland, and directed by Danny Boyle. The film follows a small group of survivors as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a mysterious, incurable virus.
