In an exclusive interview featured in the latest issue of Fangoria Magazine, director André Øvredal delves into his vision for “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” aiming to create the most horrifying depiction of Dracula ever witnessed on the silver screen. Øvredal shares his vision of Dracula as a superhuman, fearsome entity that would send chills down the audience’s spines.

To bring this nightmarish vision to life, Øvredal handpicked Javier Botet, renowned for his striking performances in horror films like “[REC],” “Mama,” and “IT,” to portray the monstrous incarnation of Dracula aboard the ill-fated ship Demeter. Today, an official image gallery fully reveals Botet’s portrayal of the feral, bloodthirsty Dracula, promising an unforgettable and haunting cinematic experience.

Scheduled to hit theaters on August 11, 2023, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” has been a long-anticipated project, with writer Bragi Schut’s script circulating for years under various directors’ consideration. Ultimately, André Øvredal, known for his work on “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” took the helm for this Amblin Partners film, making the horror community eager to see his interpretation of the classic tale.

Corey Hawkins, acclaimed for his roles in “Kong: Skull Island” and “The Walking Dead,” takes on the lead in the movie. The screenplay, revised by Zak Olkewicz (“Bullet Train”), centers on a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s iconic 1897 novel “Dracula.” It unravels the eerie events surrounding the Russian schooner, Demeter, as it sets sail from Carpathia to London, carrying twenty-four enigmatic wooden crates. The doomed crew faces unimaginable horrors each night, relentlessly stalked by a terrifying presence aboard the ship. When the Demeter finally reaches Whitby Harbour, it is discovered derelict, with no trace of its crew.

Joining the ensemble cast are Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, and Nikolai Nikolaeff, with Javier Botet taking on the pivotal role of Dracula.
