Mark your calendars, as Dear David is set to hit theaters, On Demand, and Digital on October 13, 2023, just in time for Halloween.
The story of Dear David began on August 7th, 2017, when popular cartoonist Adam Ellis started sharing his experiences of being haunted by the ghost of a dead child in his apartment, who seemed intent on causing him harm. His first tweet about the haunting went viral, receiving over 55,000 retweets and 76,000 likes, leading to an ongoing thread documenting the chilling events.
The movie revolves around Adam, played by Augustus Prew, who encounters sleep paralysis and witnesses an empty rocking chair moving on its own in his apartment after responding to Internet trolls. As he documents the increasingly malevolent occurrences on Twitter, Adam becomes convinced that he is being haunted by the ghost of the deceased child, known as David. Encouraged by his boss to continue the “Dear David” thread, Adam starts to blur the lines between reality and the online world. The film is based on the viral Twitter thread by BuzzFeed comic artist Adam Ellis.
John McPhail, known for directing “Anna and the Apocalypse,” takes the helm as director. The cast includes Augustus Prew, Andrea Bang, Rene Escobar Jr., Cameron Nicoll, and Justin Long.
The screenplay for Dear David was penned by Mike Van Waes.
Lionsgate’s Vice President, Co-Productions & Acquisitions, Lauren Bixby, expressed excitement about the project, praising Dear David as a terrifying and sensational story that will captivate global Millennial and Gen Z audiences by showcasing contemporary, authentic voices.
The film carries an R-rating for violent content, language, and sexual reference. Get ready to experience a gripping and terrifying tale as Dear David hits the big screen this Halloween season.
