Arrow Video has exciting news for horror enthusiasts as they announce the upcoming 4K Ultra HD release of the original classic, Hideo Nakata’s Ring (1998). The announcement has generated buzz among fans, and pre-orders for both the Standard 4K Version and the Original Artwork Slipcover 4K Version are now available. Mark your calendars for September 19, 2023, when both versions will be officially released in the United States.

Ring, the film that ignited the J-horror wave, has been meticulously restored from the original negative in stunning 4K quality by Arrow Films. This edition comes with a plethora of bonus materials, making it a must-have for collectors and fans alike.

Director Hideo Nakata’s chilling tale of technological terror captivated audiences in 1998, redefining the horror genre and triggering the J-horror boom in the Western world. The film introduced viewers to the haunting character of Sadako, a mysterious girl with dark hair, and seamlessly blended traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary fears surrounding the pervasiveness of technology.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Limited Edition contains exclusive features, including the brand-new 4K restoration from the original camera negative by Arrow Films. The film is presented in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) for a visually immersive experience. With lossless Japanese DTS-HD master audio 5.1 and PCM 2.0 soundtracks, viewers can fully immerse themselves in the spine-chilling atmosphere. Optional English subtitles are available for accessibility.

The bonus materials are a treasure trove for Ring fans. Film historian David Kalat provides an audio commentary that delves into the intricacies of the movie. “The Ringu Legacy” presents a series of interviews with critics and filmmakers, offering insights into the lasting impact of the Ringu series. Author and critic Kat Ellinger explore the career of Hideo Nakata in “A Vicious Circle,” while author and critic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas present “Circumnavigating Ringu,” a video essay tracing the evolution of the Ringu series. Critic Jasper Sharp’s video essay, “Spooks, Sighs, and Videotape,” explores the J-horror phenomenon.

The release also includes Sadako’s video, theatrical trailers, and limited edition packaging with two artwork options. Inside the packaging, collectors will find a double-sided fold-out poster featuring two artwork options, as well as an illustrated collector’s booklet containing insightful writing on the film by Violet Lucca and Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.

In the film’s gripping storyline, a group of teenage friends is found dead, their bodies contorted in grotesque ways and their faces frozen in terror. Journalist Reiko (Nanako Matsushima, When Marnie Was There), who also happens to be the aunt of one of the victims, embarks on a quest to investigate this shocking phenomenon. In her search for answers, she uncovers an eerie urban legend about a cursed videotape. Allegedly, anyone who watches its contents will perish within a week, unless they pass on the curse by persuading someone else to watch it.

Prepare to relive the haunting experience of Ring in unparalleled visual quality with Arrow Video’s 4K Ultra HD release. It’s a collector’s dream come true, providing both nostalgic charm and a terrifying journey into the world of Sadako.
