‘Possession: Kerasukan’ – Netflix Drops Indonesian Remake of ‘Possession’ Quietly

Fans of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror masterpiece Possession were less than thrilled to hear about an upcoming remake from Paramount and Smile director Parker Finn. However, long before that, director Razka Robby Ertanto beat them to the punch with his own loose Indonesian remake, Possession: Kerasukan.
This remake, which has been quietly available for streaming on Netflix for months, stays true to the original film’s premise. The story follows Faris, who returns from military duty only to find his wife wants a divorce. As he delves into the reasons behind her sudden decision, he uncovers a chilling secret.
In Żuławski’s original film, which was recently given a new 4K restoration, the plot takes a much darker turn. Possession follows Mark (Sam Neill), a professional spy who comes home to West Berlin and discovers that his wife, Anna (Isabelle Adjani), is insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s increasingly erratic behavior spirals out of control, Mark uncovers a more sinister truth than he could have ever imagined.
The 1981 film, which was banned upon release, is known for its disturbing and emotionally raw depiction of a marriage unraveling. Adjani’s unforgettable performance, in particular, served as an inspiration for recent horror films like The First Omen. Possession is more of an emotional experience than a traditional horror movie, with its unsettling and confusing narrative, making it a one-of-a-kind film.
While the Indonesian remake, Possession: Kerasukan, shares some iconic imagery from Żuławski’s film, it notably lacks the tentacles that made the original so famous. Darius Sinathrya and Carissa Perusset star as the estranged couple, with Sara Fajira, Arswendy Bening Swara, Nugie, and Sulthan Hamonangan rounding out the cast. The film was written by Lele Laila.
Possession: Kerasukan isn’t the only Indonesian remake quietly streaming on Netflix. Monster, an Indonesian take on the 2021 thriller The Boy Behind the Door, is also available for streaming now.
