‘Barbarian’ Director Zach Cregger Set to Write and Direct Next ‘Resident Evil’ Film

After seven live-action films and a brief-lived Netflix series, Resident Evil is making its way back to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are teaming up for a new adaptation of the iconic video game series, with Barbarian director Zach Cregger set to write and direct. The project has sparked a bidding war, with multiple studios vying for the rights.

In an exclusive report, THR’s Borys Kit reveals that four major studios are competing for the film, including Warner Bros. and Netflix.

Cregger’s version of Resident Evil is said to return to the series’ horror roots, offering a more faithful adaptation of the original games. Fans may be familiar with this approach, as the 2021 film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City also attempted to do the same, but struggled to connect with audiences. That film followed the massive success of six movies starring Milla Jovovich, which collectively grossed over $1 billion by embracing a more action-oriented take on the franchise.

More recently, the Netflix Resident Evil series debuted in July 2022 but was canceled after just one season due to lukewarm reception.

Cregger’s next project is Weapons, a horror film set for release by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema on January 16, 2026. Described as a “multi and inter-related story horror epic” with a tone akin to Magnolia, it’s one to keep an eye on.
