Lee Daniels, known for his directorial work on acclaimed films like “Precious” and “The Butler,” ventures into the horror genre with the upcoming Netflix Original movie, “The Deliverance.” Recently, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) announced the official rating for the film.

The MPA has given “The Deliverance” an “R” rating due to its depiction of violent content, pervasive language, and some sexual references. Starring Omar Epps, Demi Singleton, Miss Lawrence, and Anthony B. Jenkins, the film is categorized as an “exorcism thriller.” Joining the ensemble cast are Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique, Aunjanue Ellis, Caleb McLaughlin, and Tasha Smith.

In “The Deliverance,” the story revolves around Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother, who relocates her family to a new residence. However, eerie events unfold, leading child protective services to suspect Ebony of child abuse. As the occurrences escalate into something demonic, Ebony not only contends with the bureaucratic system for her children but also finds herself engaged in a spiritual battle against a malevolent entity for her faith, life, and the souls of her children. The narrative draws inspiration from a true story.

The screenplay for “The Deliverance” was penned by Lee Daniels himself, along with co-writers David Coggeshall, Elijah Bynum, and Thomas Westfall. Netflix secured the rights to the film in a competitive bidding war, reportedly paying $65 million.
