As fans eagerly await updates on A24 and Peacock’s “Crystal Lake” TV series, currently navigating a change in showrunners, Horror Inc. is making waves with their latest announcement: “Jason Universe,” heralding a fresh era for the iconic “Friday the 13th” franchise.
Revealed exclusively through IGN, the unveiling of “Jason Universe” promises a multitude of new ventures under the stewardship of the original franchise owners. According to IGN’s report, the initiative will encompass a broad spectrum of platforms, spanning entertainment, gaming, immersive experiences, merchandise, and more, with additional announcements slated throughout 2024.
Robert Barsamian, President of Horror, Inc., expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “For decades, Jason shocked and thrilled audiences who kept coming back for more. We’re excited to work with Victor Miller and Marc Toberoff on new projects we’ll announce in the coming months.”
Barsamian emphasized the company’s dedication to honoring the franchise’s legacy while enhancing the fan experience and captivating modern horror audiences through innovative storytelling and engagement opportunities.
Sheri Conn, Global GM of Horror, Inc., echoed Barsamian’s sentiments, highlighting Jason’s enduring relevance in popular culture and the enthusiastic support of a global fanbase. Conn emphasized the anticipation surrounding the introduction of new activations within the “Jason Universe.”
Victor Miller, the original writer of “Friday the 13th,” who regained rights to the horror classic, along with Marc Toberoff and Robert Barsamian, is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the franchise. However, it’s important to note that legal complexities surrounding the film rights may present challenges in producing new Friday movies.
Former “Crystal Lake” showrunner Bryan Fuller shed light on the intricate legal landscape, explaining, “The movie rights are a completely different thing. They are tied up at New Line and are super, super messy.”
