HBO to Adapt Gillian Flynn’s ‘Dark Places’ into a Limited Series
Renowned author Gillian Flynn, best known for “Gone Girl,” is set to bring her 2009 novel, “Dark Places,” to the small screen as an HBO limited series. Initially adapted into a movie in 2015 starring Charlize Theron, the novel is now getting a fresh treatment for television.
According to Variety, Gillian Flynn will play a pivotal role in the series as co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner, teaming up with Brett Johnson, who will also co-create, write, and showrun. Guerrin Gardner is credited as a co-creator and writer, as reported by Variety.
The official synopsis for “Dark Places” sets the stage for a gripping narrative: Libby Day, a survivor of the infamous 1985 ‘Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas,’ recounts the murder of her mother and two sisters. Initially testifying against her teenage brother, Ben, as the killer, Libby finds herself in the present day, approached by mother/daughter true crime investigators who believe Ben is innocent. Eager to capitalize on her tragic past, Libby embarks on a journey, reconnecting with the individuals involved that night for a fee. As her quest unfolds, taking her from seedy Missouri strip clubs to deserted Oklahoma tourist traps, the shocking truth emerges, placing Libby back on the run from a killer.
Blue Marble Pictures’ Theresa Kang and Caroline Garity will serve as executive producers, alongside Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi of Iervolino & Lady Bacardi Entertainment.
Gillian Flynn’s involvement in the project adds to her impressive portfolio, having previously written “Sharp Objects,” another novel adapted into an HBO series. Additionally, Flynn took on the roles of showrunner, writer, and producer for Amazon Prime Video’s “Utopia.” With a proven track record, her collaboration with HBO promises to deliver another compelling and suspenseful television experience.
