The appreciation for Karyn Kusama’s 2009 horror film “Jennifer’s Body” has experienced a significant resurgence in recent years, with the fanbase growing and reevaluating the movie’s merits. Starring Megan Fox as Jennifer, a cheerleader possessed by a demonic force who targets her male classmates, the film is now recognized as a feminist revenge story ahead of its time, gaining a cult classic status 15 years later.

Diablo Cody, the writer of “Jennifer’s Body,” has reentered the horror scene with her latest film, “Lisa Frankenstein,” directed by Zelda Williams and set to hit theaters on February 9. In a recent interview with BD, Cody discussed her thoughts on the renewed interest in “Jennifer’s Body.”

Reflecting on the film’s initial reception, Cody expressed, “At first, I was excited about it, but I was also a little bit salty because I remember thinking, well, where was this audience when the movie came out? It was a critical, commercial failure. I was pretty humiliated. It was a rough experience having that movie come out. It was rough for me, it was rough for Megan [Fox]… [then] people started suddenly talking about it like it was a good movie, which I had thought all along.”

Over time, Cody’s perspective has shifted. She explained, “At first, I just thought, oh, where was this audience when I needed it, and then I realized they were like… seven. And then some people who maybe didn’t appreciate it at the time have come around, and now I’m just like, there’s no saltiness, now I’m just happy.”

Despite the newfound cult classic status of “Jennifer’s Body,” there has been no indication of a sequel or continuation. When asked about the possibility of returning to the movie’s universe for a sequel or television series, Cody expressed her eagerness. “YES! I wanna do a sequel,” she enthusiastically admitted. However, she emphasized the need to find the right partners who share her passion for the project. Cody stated, “I am not done with Jennifer’s Body. I just need to find… I need to partner with people who believe it in as much as I do, and that hasn’t really happened yet. I need someone to believe in it who has a billion dollars.”

Additionally, Cody shared that she is currently working on another horror script, describing it as the “most straight horror, like, overt, gore, scary thing” she has ever written. She expressed pride in the concept but noted the need to complete the script.
