Kevin Williamson Advocates for Fair Compensation for Neve Campbell
In the world of slasher films, Sidney Prescott, portrayed by the talented Neve Campbell, stands out as one of the iconic final girls. No sinister boyfriend, creepy film student, or long-lost half-brother could unseat her from her throne. She was undeniably the face of the Scream franchise – not to be confused with the Ghostface. However, it appears that while fans recognized her worth, the studio did not. Fortunately, Scream writer Kevin Williamson has stepped up to champion her cause, asserting that she deserved every penny she asked for.
During an appearance on the Happy Horror Time podcast (as reported by IndieWire), Williamson, known for his work on the first two Scream films and Scream 4, voiced his support for Neve Campbell’s call for fair compensation. He expressed:
“I totally respect her opinion…I know exactly where she’s coming from, I know her well. I love and adore her and that’s what she did. It’s right for her. I love everyone involved in Scream and all I can say is, pay her the money. That’s what I would do, I would give her the money.”
The franchise took a bold step in its sixth installment, omitting Neve Campbell’s Sidney and relocating the story to New York City. Surprisingly, the movie enjoyed immense success, raking in nearly $170 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise. However, it appears that despite our collective love for Neve Campbell and our desire to see Sidney Prescott return, we may need to come to terms with the possibility that neither may make a comeback.
In his plea for Neve Campbell’s return as Sidney Prescott, Williamson also added
“I’m sure there’s a number they can agree on that will make them both happy so hopefully one day they will figure that all out.”
And he’s not alone in his corner. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who helmed Scream and Scream VI, share his enthusiasm for Neve’s return, stating firmly
“We’d never give up on her. We love Neve, and we love Sidney. So we’d love to be able to make another movie with her, and we’re not giving up.”
The question remains: Would Neve Campbell reprise her role as Sidney Prescott for another Scream film if the conditions were right? Can the franchise truly thrive without her? We invite you to share your thoughts and opinions on the matter.
