‘Twilight of the Dead’: George A. Romero’s Long-Awaited Zombie Movie Finally Rising from the Grave

The legacy of horror maestro George A. Romero lives on, as his long-awaited zombie movie “Twilight of the Dead” is finally coming to fruition. Since Romero’s passing in 2017, the film had seen occasional glimmers of hope, but now it has secured backing from Roundtable Entertainment and is set to begin production in late 2023 in Puerto Rico.

The collaboration between the George A. Romero estate and LA-based financier-producer Roundtable Entertainment positions “Twilight of the Dead” as the ultimate chapter in Romero’s iconic ‘Dead’ franchise. Although the original treatment was penned by Romero himself, the screenplay was further developed by Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati.

Following the footsteps of Romero’s seminal zombie films like “Night of the Living Dead,” “Dawn of the Dead,” “Day of the Dead,” “Land of the Dead,” “Diary of the Dead,” and “Survival of the Dead,” “Twilight of the Dead” ventures into a fresh setting: a tropical island.

The film promises to explore the dark essence of humanity from the perspective of the last surviving humans, caught in a perilous conflict with factions of the undead.

While the production team, led by Romero’s last wife and estate manager Suzanne Romero, is in talks with a director and has been in discussions with potential cast members, progress has been impacted by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Nevertheless, they are working on securing an interim agreement to move forward.

The esteemed producers of the project include Suzanne Romero, John Baldecchi, Sarah Donnelly, Paolo Zelati, and Ardvella Entertainment’s Stephanie Caleb, with Dominic Ianno, Alex Dundas, Jason Resnick, Chris Roe, and Luis Riefkohl serving as executive producers.

Excited about the collaboration with Roundtable, Suzanne Romero expressed her delight in bringing Romero’s eerie universe to life, assuring that the film would honor his legacy. Meanwhile, Roundtable’s Head of Scripted, John Baldecchi, emphasized the importance of this final chapter in the legendary horror franchise, conveying a powerful and timely message about humanity’s self-destructive tendencies.

With eager anticipation in the creative community, “Twilight of the Dead” is gearing up to provide a fitting and captivating conclusion to one of the greatest horror legacies of all time. The team is ready to make critical decisions as they move closer to the filming stage.
